Chapter 8

The Colonel’s voice echoed up the stairs and Elizabeth pressed herself against the wall to keep herself out of sight.

“Ah! Mr. Darcy, I am pleased to see that you had not given up hope of my return. I trust you were well taken care of?”

The gentleman’s reply was muffled and Elizabeth strained to hear what was said, but the drawing room door closed and the light from the room was snuffed out. The house was quiet once more, and Elizabeth took a deep breath and allowed her eyes to adjust to the dimly lit corridor. Her stomach growled again and she pressed her hands against it.

She padded down the corridor to her room and paused at the door, she wondered if she should check on Lydia, but it was very late, and it would do no good to wake her sister.

It did not help that she was not entirely certain why she felt she should check on Lydia—it was just a feeling that something was not quite right.

Elizabeth stepped through the chamber door and closed it gently behind her. She leaned against the chilled wood and shook her head to try and clear her thoughts, but they were squarely focused on how it had felt to have Mr. Darcy’s lips pressed against hers.

She leaned her head back against the door and groaned quietly. What a fool she had been. Her stomach growled again and Elizabeth gritted her teeth. Going to bed on an empty stomach would be difficult, but she had no choice. She could not very well go downstairs now that the Colonel had returned.

Dawn was hours away, but all she could do was try to sleep.

She shrugged out of her robe and threw it down upon the end of the bed before crawling beneath the coverlet.

Elizabeth thumped her head back on the pillow and glared up at the canopy above her head.

Foolish. She had been foolish to speak to Mr. Darcy alone… That kiss should never have happened.

But scolding herself would do no good, nor would it help her to dwell upon what had happened. Mr. Darcy had made her a promise—and she must cling to that. He had promised her that he would speak to Mr. Bingley about Jane… Surely, things could be set right between them and Mr. Bingley would then return to Hertfordshire and make the proposal that Jane so longed for.

She could only hope that this new Mr. Darcy, so different from the man she had met in Hertfordshire the previous autumn, would be a man of his word…

But what that might mean for her was entirely unknown.
